Idea: Discontinuous Benefit in Screen-size Improvement

September 16, 2008

We already know that bigger screens lead to better productivity (but don’t ask me for a citation, I don’t know one.)

I suspect that there are discontinuities in the screen-size/productivity curve.

Specifically, my hypothesis is that there is a discontinuity at 24″ because at this screen size it becomes possible to leave two full tasks open side-by-side, whereas smaller screens still require operating-system task switches to see information between windows.

This is a testable, falsifiable and interesting hypothesis.
